While going through some old kinescopes, I came upon this clip of former President Herbert Hoover giving a speech on the opening day of the Republican National Convention held at the International Ampitheater in Chicago, IL.
This was the year that Richard Nixon and Henry Cabot Lodge were nominated to run against John Kennedy & Lyndon Johnson. (As you know, Nixon lost but later won along with VP Spiro Agnew.)
Anyway, here is a clip of 85 year old Hoover’s speech to the convention on July 25, 1960.
UPDATE: See my recent updates on both the Democratic & Republican National Conventions of 1960.

While no viable candidates to the occasion, the event served as a good opportunity to revitalize a community that hasn’t had this much collective energy since Matt Gonzalez almost beat Newsom four years ago.

Chris Daly has since announced that he will not be running, but Ross Mirkarimi has been somewhat coy about his possible run. Aside from an interview in BeyondChron, Matt Gonzalez has also been quite non-commital. So who will run against Gavin Newsom?

Mayor Bloomberg directed the NYPD to stifle Constitutional rights of free speech and freedom of assembly by stopping any “protests” that may embarrass George Bush and the Republican party. Clips in this video are two days before the Convention even began, when police arrested 250 people during the Critical Mass bike ride, a non-partisan event which has occurred every month since 1994. Even more shocking, many of those being arrested had nothing to do with the bike ride, but had the misfortune of crossing the street while this was happening.
