How could the Convention create two opposing interest groups?

September 8th, 2011

This is one of my questions on a worksheet I got about the Constitutional Convention.
There is another question I would like to ask: how should power be distributed between the state and federal governments?

The Convention really created two sets of dividing lines. The first was the large states against the small states. You can read and figure out how that ended. the second was between those wanting a strong central government and those wanting more power to reside in the states. The nationalists won that one with a large degree of power still residing in the state governments.

What is the real reason Abdelbaset Al-Megrhi was released from a Scottish Prison?

September 5th, 2011

Was it because he would be dead in 3 months (2years ago) or was it because all the Scottish prisons are running at about 50% over capacity, over the european convention on human rights recommendations.
The Scottish Prison Service has closed 5 Prisons and are about to close another 2

Megrhi would have a complete suite to himself to avoid reprisals from other prisoners, so letting him go make a complete suite free to overfill with many more prisoners, so is it all about numbers and to hell with justice

He was released for compassionate grounds.

What is the explanation for miracles taking place in church services, if it’s "not from God"?

August 26th, 2011

There was a Christian youth convention this passed weekend, and I went along with the youth group at my church to help the pastor out and watch some of the girls. Last night, there was an amazing service all dedicated to the power of healing and how God can bring miracles if we pray for one another. There were atleast 30, maybe even more, youth healed of severe asthma that were able to run all around the college without stopping to take a breath (the convention was held at a college). There were also many people healed of Scoliosis and other vertebrae issues, along with anything in general such as knee problems and severe arthritis, and many spinal issues were healed.. these people had all been suffering for many years, if not their whole life. If you don’t believe that God did it, then what is the explanation for all of these youth being healed all together in one night after being prayed for? I’d like to know some of your opinions. Thanks in advance

Be careful, seeing is not always believing. I am always suspicious of these so called miracles where groups of people are instantly healed. Usually it is some kind of scam meant to mislead the afflicted because they are vulnerable and are willing to try anything. Sometimes the so called afflicted are part of the scam. The goal is almost always monetary gain. I say again, use sound judgment and do not be deceived.

Does the EU human rights convention recognize compulsory military service as an offense against human rights?

August 24th, 2011

If not why? i know some EU countries have it such as Germany, but this is a serious issue, because you are forced to do something against your will and it doesn’t matter if you are innocent. please help i need to know, it’s urgent

Compulsory military service is never a human rights issue any more than compulsory jury duty or compulsory payment of taxes. It is the price of citizenship. It can be avoided by renouncing citizenship and leaving the country.

Can a hotel charge you an extra night when you’re not even booked for that night?

August 22nd, 2011

I got a notice today from a hotel that they are charging me an extra night at $102 + tax for the 23 of May. However, I booked the room for the 27th and the 28th and that’s it. I reported it to the Better Business Bureau to see if this was against the law. I had reserved a room for a convention at the convention rate this letter I received went out to all con goers who reserved a room under the special rate. Is this legal in the state of North Carolina or the U.S. because I don’t see why we have to pay for a room 4 days in advance from our actually booked date.
I have called twice the rooms director that sent out the email never returned my call. I call the same day I got the letter

Did you call and ask them why?
Doesn’t make sense to me either and I’m guessing you will be getting an apology email soon.

The campaign against marijuana 1930-1937

Main article: Legal history of marijuana in the United States
Restrictions for cannabis as a drug, often called Indian Hemp in documents from 1900 to 1930s, started in District of Columbia 1906 and was followed by state laws in other parts of the country in the 1910s and 1920s. The early laws against the cannabis drugs were passed with little public attention. Concern about marijuana was related primarily to the fear that marijuana use would spread, even among whites, as a substitute for the opiates. In 1925 United States supported regulation of Indian hemp, Cannabis for use as a drug, in the International Opium Convention.[2] Recommendations from the International Opium Convention inspired the work with The Uniform State Narcotic Act between 1925 and 1932. Harry J. Anslinger became an active person in this process from about 1930.[3][4]
Anslinger received as head of The Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN) (from his point of view) an alarming increase of reports about smoking of marijuana in 1936 continued of a spread at an accelerated pace in 1937. Before, smoking of marijuana had been relatively slight and confined to the Southwest, particularly along the Mexican border. The Bureau launched two important steps. First, the Bureau prepared a legislative plan to seek from Congress a new law that would place marijuana and its distribution directly under federal control. Second, Anslinger ran a campaign against marijuana on radio and at major forums.[5][non-primary source needed]
Some of his critics allege that Anslinger and the campaign against marijuana had an hidden agenda, DuPont petrochemical interests and William Randolph Hearst together created the highly sensational anti-marijuana campaign to eliminate hemp as an industrial competitor. The credibility of this theory is weakened by the fact that hemp never managed to become a competitive alternative to wood pulp or nylon in any country in the twentieth century, see Hemp. Indeed, Anslinger did not himself consider marijuana a serious threat to American society until in the fourth year of his tenure (1934), at which point an anti-marijuana campaign, aimed at alarming the public, became his primary focus as part of the government’s broader push to outlaw all drugs.[6][not in citation given]
Members of the League of Nations had already implemented restrictions for marijuana in the beginning of the 1930s and restrictions started in many states in U.S years before Anslinger was appointed. Both president Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Attorney General publicly supported this development in 1935.[6][non-primary source needed]

Distance from New York New York Hotel in Las Vegas to Las Vegas Convention Center?

August 17th, 2011

We are trying to find out the distance from the New York New York Hotel (near the Airport) to Las Vegas Convention Center purposely to attend an event. How many minutes by taxi please?

You can use this website to estimate taxi fare http://www.taxifarefinder.com/main.php?city=LV and it says that the distance from Ny NY Hotel to the Las Vegas Convention Center is 4.1 miles and will take 7 minutes. The total cost would be $17.26 including 15% tip.

An alternative would be to take the monorail. From New York New York, walk across the street to MGM Grand and follow the signs inside to the monorail station. Buy tickets at the kiosk ($5 one way or $12 for a one-day pass to get you there and back) and hop on the monorail. It stops at Bally’s, Flamingo, Harrah’s and then the Las Vegas Convention Center and it will take you a total of maybe 5 minutes to get there, it’s really fast. http://lvmonorail.com/

What are the Conventions of a short story?

August 15th, 2011

What are the conventions of a short story? In general, what is it? And what are the conventions of a short story found in Rip Van Winkle?

I’ve had a quiz asking me to explain this, and I didn’t know what it was, and ended up with 4/10, as I thought conventions was another word for "elements". Even after the quiz, it’s hard to find a definition on the internet. Can anyone explain please?

this was a posting for another writer it should give you an idea what convention means

Re: Conventions of a short story?
Well with the limited information i have on your question i would suggest reading a little about Aristotes Unities of Time, Place and Action. An author ‘sticking’ to one setting, during a particular, singular time scale and with just the one main plot i.e. no sub-plots is usually conventional with the ‘short story’ for obvious reasons. Try doing some reasearch into the history of the short story, the likes Checkhov- its greatest pioneers and then theres also the more modern day short story writers such as Raymond Carver.

to be conventional is to be standard what everyone else does
