Casual restaurant in Warehouse District near Convention Center?
February 28th, 2010 | by admin |My husband and I are going to see the Tyler Perry play on the Friday the 26th. We want to go to a nice restaurant maybe under $100 where we can eat creole/cajun(soul food) near the Convention center. I heard of Mulates but just not too sure about them. Any suggestions…
We are not tourist, just never really ate near the Convention center.
I am from New Orleans and lived here my whole life (21 years)
There are not that many restaurants in the Warehouse District; there are more in the downtown business district, right next to it. Mulate’s is very popular and serves fine Cajun food, which is very spicy (hot!). Mulate’s is located at the corner of Convention Center Blvd. and Julia St. There is a food court in the Riverwalk Mall, across the street from Mulate’s, which has plenty of places for sandwiches and a Mike Anderson’s Seafood outlet. Emeril’s is the only other restaurant I would recommend in the Warehouse District, but it is rather expensive. It’s at Julia and Tchoupitoulas Streets. They serve Creole food.
By the way, Creole, Cajun, and soul food are 3 DIFFERENT types of food in south Louisiana; they are NOT the same, and are not interchangeable. Cajun food is what the decendants of the French Acadians eat, and it’s highly seasoned and very spicy–that is, they use lots of cayenne pepper and Tabasco sauce. Creole food is a mixture of European, Caribbean and American influence, and is usually NOT that spicy; soul food is plain home cooking of certain dishes by Southern American black people. There used to be a soul food restaurant downtown, but I don’t think it’s open anymore since Katrina. It was the Two Sisters Kitchen, off Canal and Claiborne–I ate there a few times–excellent food and very filling.

NOLAjazz gave a great summary! But may I suggest that you take a taxi (it is 5.23 miles from the Convention Center) to Clancy’s Restaurant. It is not a fancy place, it’s an old place on the street corner, (which always seems to be the best ones!), has been in business for a very long time and the food is excellent, and they will have that Creole flavor you are looking for.
Here is a web page with reviews, and address and a phone number. If you should decide to visit Clancy’s, make your reservations now!

It’s not Creole, Cajun, or Soul food, but try the Sun Ray Grill at 1051 Annunciation Street. They also have free parking.
