Can I get your thought’s on the transcript from ‘Real Time’ 10/19/07?

And finally, New Rule: If the choice in ’08 is between Rudy and Hillary, “values voters” must do the Christian thing and choose Hillary. [applause] Of course – of course, I think all religion is nuts, but at least she practices it the way Jesus suggested: privately. Like a Dick Cheney energy meeting. [laughter] [applause]

Plus, she’s raised an admirable daughter, while Rudy’s kids couldn’t hate him more if they were New York City firefighters. [laughter] [applause]

And let’s not forget, Hillary didn’t commit adultery. Her husband did. And afterwards, she did the Christian thing and forgave him. And then she had a GPS unit implanted in his penis. [laughter] But the important thing is, she forgave him! [applause]

Now, I bring all this up because this weekend in Washington is the “Values Voters Convention.” Three days of peace, love and hypocrisy. [laughter] Where the Republican frontrunners will spend the week kissing the asses of 2,000 social conservatives who despise liberals, homosexuals, Muslims, Mexicans and Nobel Prize winners. [laughter] [applause] And who believe the sound of a condom wrapper being opened makes angels die. [laughter] [applause]

It’s kind of like a “Star Trek” convention, only the virgins are angry—[laughter]—and they think outer space is just a theory. [laughter] So, Ann Coulter, if you’ve got any more “faggot” jokes, this is the room for you. [laughter] [applause]

But – but, here’s something I learned while indulging one of my traditional values, reading. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the states with the most conservative Christians have the highest rates of divorce, the highest teen pregnancy rates and the highest obesity levels. Yes, they’re fat, knocked up and not talking to each other—[laughter]—but, at least they put homosexuality back where it belongs: in the airport men’s room. [laughter] [applause]

Now, I know what you “values voters” are saying right now: “Why would we listen to you, Bill Maher? You’re a bachelor from heathen California. What do you know about family values?” Well, I know enough not to get married and live in Kansas. [laughter] [applause]

And I know that if you can look at the war in Iraq, the melting environments and the descent of America into “idiocracy,” and still think our biggest problems are boobies during the Super Bowl and the “war on Christmas,” then you don’t have values, you have issues. [laughter] [applause]

If you had “values,” you’d draw the line at torture. But a startling number of people who call themselves Christians don’t. And I’m pretty sure if you asked, “What would Jesus veto,” it wouldn’t be health care for sick kids. [applause] [cheers]

Why, it’s almost like “values voters” don’t really believe Jesus was right about anything. [laughter] [in mock attack ad voice] “Jesus Christ: wrong on gays, wrong on taxes, wrong on torture, and wrong for America.” [laughter] [applause]

Bill Maher is the epitome of Liberal thinking. Studies suggest that Libs are more comfortable with ambiguity. This may be true; casual observations of the past 40 years show that Libs revel in amoral hedonism. Unfortunately, hedonism ultimately makes them sick. They then wish they were less ambiguous. This pragmatism soon passes when they realize that they can petition the government to pay for the consequences of their choices.

Maher justifies his life of hedonism by spewing that Republicans can be tempted too…the hypocrits!

I think it’s sheer genius. As I’ve said, Christians are some of the most un-Christlike people in the country, and their politics are bassackwards.

And just what did you expect given the source.
Over the weekend didn’t I see a clip showing this jerk pretending to bodily remove a heckler from his audience.
Not that I blame him for that. Its his show so whatever.
My points are that first he made sure the security guys got to the heckler ahead of him. Then acted all macho.
The other point is that on many occasions I have seen where Conservatives were shouted down by libs that they couldn’t speak even though they were in a paid venue.

Talk about a double standard if Anne Coulter put security on anyone the MSM would have a field day. Even more so if she took part in the scuffle herself.

Come on CFB. You do not address the issue but rather attack the source. Bill did not make up the census numbers. I think he is rather brave for saying this kind of stuff out loud, and he does it all the time. However, high rates of teen pregnancy, obesity and divorce are also indicators of low income and low levels of education. This does not refute what Maher said but draws another parallel. If one was a wise ass, and I have been accused, you could make the claim that low income and lack of education causes obesity, teen pregnancy, divorce and "professed" Christianity. I don’t think that "professed" Christianity is the cause of anything….I think it is a symptom.
As far as the hecklers in the audience, if they can use his airtime for high theater I think he certainly should be able to. I saw it live. I recognized the fact that he was showboating and acting psuedo tough. I was also very entertained. His show was sabotaged and disrupted and he turned it into entertainment. Good for him. By the way, did you know what the hecklers were on about? They think Bush planned 9/11 and Maher doesn’t. Those people needed to be removed. They are wack jobs and were not going to be quiet. I certainly did not want to listen to them yelling from the audience for 45 minutes. If Anne Coulter had a one hour live show I would support her right to do exactly what Maher did. However, getting heckled in a public venue is entirly different.

    Pretty good stuff.

Ironic that some atheists seem to have a clearer understanding of the teachings of Jesus that so many self-described "Christians," and I say that as someone who is not an atheist.

There have been a number of other great American "free-thinkers," people like Mark Twain and the recently deceased Kurt Vonnegut Jr. The following link is something the latter wrote shortly before his demise, about the Bush administration. Vonnegut also refers to the words of Jesus to show how disconnected current U.S. policy is from these, despite the lip service given by Bush to "the religious right". (By the way, if something like 90 or 95% of Americans believe in God, how is it that religiousness is so often ascribed to be the province of only conservatives in the media? It seems to me that religious beliefs go across the board, and I bet that absence of religious beliefs, or atheism, does too):

    Custodians of chaos:
In this exclusive extract from his forthcoming memoirs, Kurt Vonnegut is horrified by the hypocrisy in contemporary US politics

p.s. as good as the Maher speech is, I wish he would retract other recent statements he made about people trying to disseminate truth on 9/11 (his ignorant comments meant to insult people who are trying to educate people on the controlled demolitions of the WTC7 buildings belie his obvious intelligence and willingness to call to question a lot of other "official" bullsh*t. Even if he is skeptical, or unwilling to look at the evidence at the moment, I think he should seriously investigate the issue on his show, of government complicity in 9/11, or at least of evidence of complicity and evidence of a cover-up. Perhaps he simply can’t discuss it, due to the ownership of the network which runs his show, and maybe also he isn’t ready to look at things like the collapse of the WTC7 building, for personal reasons such as his attachment to Israel (as non-religious as he claims to be). It may have seemed rude, the people who came into his audience and heckled him following those comments he made, but he had insulted a lot of other people having similar beliefs who are trying to educate people, and it took cajones, what those people did, to go in there, and bring the issue forward on live mainstream (well, cable) television, specifically by referring to the 47-story WTC7 building, which was NOT hit by any airplane, but which also collapsed straight down at free fall speed, a phenomenon which still has not been explained by the government (the 9/11 Commission Report does not even MENTION the collapse of this building on 9/11, a building which housed offices of the Department of Defense, FBI, CIA, Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as Rudy Giuliani’s Emergency Preparedness Center – a lot of evidence was destroyed in that building).

As for his reaction to the hecklers, as comic as it looked for him to run out and play "bouncer", he later had other options than to say that he simply would "not discuss this issue." For example, I would love to have him speak to such experts on the topic as David Ray Griffin, professor Steven Jones, or Richard Gage from "Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth." They would all make interesting, rational, level-headed guests armed with facts difficult to disprove. Since he has had people like Ann Coulter on, he could even invite the somewhat more fiery Alex Jones on… it certainly would be an interesting conversation, and that’s what he says he is going for on his show, thought-provoking and interesting discussions.
